Cuarentena

What is Cuarentena?

Cuarentena (quar-an-teen-uh) refers to the Mexican postpartum tradition of 40 days of postpartum care, often referred to as ‘mothering the mother’. It includes healing meals, herbal healing aids, and Cerrada Postparto, or ‘closing of the bones’.

In the Mexican tradition, it is believed that the soul of the birthing parent leaves the body temporarily during birth in order to give the baby’s soul space to travel from the spiritual realm, into the mortal realm, using the birther’s body as a pathway. Cerrada Postparto (Closing of the Bones) not only gives physical support and healing, but also returns the missing soul to its home. Everything that is included in the Cuarentena tradition is instrumental in this healing, and in keeping the tradition whole. For these reasons, Cuarentena will only be offered as a full package.
